There’s a growing gap between rich and poor, we all know that, but now we know how big that gap is.
Oxfam says the world’s eight richest people now have as much wealth as the poorest 50 per cent of the world’s population. That’s about 3.6-billion people!
Here in Canada, the wealth of our two richest men, Galen Weston and David Thomson, is equivalent to that of the poorest 30 per cent of our population, or about 11-million Canadians.
So who are these eight people…..ahem, sorry….men? (No women on the list!)
Bill Gates: $75 billion
Amancio Ortega: $67 billion
Warren Buffett: $60.8 billion
Carlos Slim Helu: $50 billion
Jeff Bezos: $45.2 billion
Mark Zuckerberg: $44.6 billion
Larry Ellison: $43.6 billion
Michael Bloomberg: $40 billion
Most of these men made their fortunes in technology and the majority are American, with one European and one Mexican on the list. The good news? Several have pledged to give it all to charity.
