If you bring a bottle of wine to a party, is the host obligated to open it?
This was the question that first got Brian and I talking about holiday party etiquette.
I believe if you bring a bottle of wine to a party, it’s considered a gift and it does not need to be opened.
However, Brian is under the impression that it’s rude for a host to tuck the bottle away and they should open it for everyone to enjoy during the party.
To solve this, we called up etiquette expert Clark Day from Bayview Farm restaurant in Kingston.
Listen to the answer below…
Here’s is Clark Day’s biggest DO and biggest DON’T for holiday gatherings…
DO: Bring a gift
Day says while this can be a bottle of wine, it doesn’t have to be; however, you should never show up empty-handed.
DON’T: Show Up Early
We all know that showing up late is usually frowned upon, but showing up early can be just as bad when it comes to dinner parties. Day says if you’ve been invited over for 7pm, show up at that time. Don’t show up at 6:45pm, and don’t show up at 7:45pm. In this case, better to be a few minutes later than to be early.
Please drink responsibility and have a very Merry Christmas!
