Good news if you love the “Matrix” movies: we are one step closer to being destroyed by robots. No, really. Robot designer Alexander Reben just created a robot whose sole purpose is to inflict pain on humans. The robot breaks the first rule in the “laws of robotics” — which is that a robot can never hurt a human.
Reben’s reasoning for creating human harming robots? “[It was] important to take it out of the thought experiment realm into reality,” he explains. “Because once something exists in the world, you have to confront it.” Gee, thanks bro.
So what’s on this thing? Shotguns, razorblades, razorblade shooting shotguns? Nope – just an arm with a small needle attached that can inflict a little bit of pain on someone’s finger. The robot then decides whether or not to attack whomever puts their finger under the needle.
If this sounds familiar, it should. Just last year, Stephen Hawking claimed robots could take out the entire human race and Tesla’s Elon Musk has been warning about a scenario where robots and humans are battling. So a good first step towards our impending doom right? I just hope they don’t start walking around naked like Arnie from the Terminator franchise.
