We hear about how important sleep is for all kinds of reasons, aside from the fact that we feel less-than-human when we continually don’t get enough. And we want the boost to our immune system, improved memories and to live longer that come from a good night of shut eye. The problem is that sometimes we just can’t fall asleep. So here are some bizarre but totally helpful ways to fall asleep faster:
- Get cold- take a cool shower or bath, turn the air conditioner down and sleep naked. Taking a warm bath or shower works too, since your body temp will drop quickly after you get out, and scientists found that helps make us sleepy.
- The 4-7-8 exercise- Regulating your breathing pattern lowers your heart rate and blood pressure, which will make you sleepy. So inhale for four seconds, then hold your breath for seven seconds, and finally exhale for eight seconds. Not so sure about this one? Why not try it; you’re lying there trying to fall asleep anyway.
- Recount your day – Starting with the first thing that you did when you woke up, go through your whole day, step-by-step to take your mind off of trying to fall asleep.
- Pretend to be tired- Fake it until you make it, right? So try to trick your brain into thinking you’re exhausted. How do you do that? Focus on feeling like your body is sinking into your bed, imagine it’s getting darker and that your eyelids are getting heavier.
