I lived in Fort Mac for a couple of years. Met some great people and have fond memories of my time there. So when I see the city engulfed in flames, it’s a bit of shock.
Those that live in Fort McMurray are among the most genuine and kind people you will meet. Now, with temperatures above 30 degrees, and the forest fire growing at a raid rate – these people are fleeing their homes in hopes of escaping the flames.
It’s easy to watch the footage on the news and think ‘wow – that’s insane’, but to recognize the buildings and some of the faces involved is something that is hard to describe. Having lived out west for the better part of my adult life, forest fires are a common occurrence during the warmer months. But rarely do you ever see an entire city being evacuated.
Fort McMurray is the 4th largest city in Alberta. Over 60,000 people call it home. Here’s hoping that the residents stay safe along with the brave individuals staying behind to fight the flames in an effort to save what’s left. Our thoughts are with you.
