Yesterday, the Leafs confirmed the signing of Nikita Zaitsev – The 24-year-old is considered Russia’s top defencemen. This is just the latest move from the Maple Leafs as they look to avoid having more jerseys tossed onto the ice during home games.
If we are to assume that the Leafs will, in fact, sign Auston Matthews in the Draft – and if it’s feasible that Steve Stamkos could suit up in the blue and white – you just may see the Leafs become a contender….not in a few years…but next season!
As you may already know, I’m a Leaf fan – so I’m a little bias and of course a little hopeful of what may be in the works here. That said, it would be nice to have all of our Canadian teams in a situation to make the playoffs consistently. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t watched a single playoff game this year. I’m just not emotionally attached to any of the teams.
Leaf fan or not, it’s nice to see a Canadian team looking to become stronger and more competitive. The Leafs aren’t just talking about rebuilding, they’re actually doing it. ’67 was a long time ago – it’s time we built something that can win.
Question is, do you think it’ll work?
