Forget 5 a day – it’s now 6 a day… It’s news that beer lovers and Homer Simpson have been waiting for!
Drinking six pints a day is OK for your health, a leading alcohol scientist says. Dr Poikolainen’s study, from Helsinki University, is based on decades of research into the effects of booze, suggest drinkers live longer than teetotallers. He said: “The weight of evidence shows moderate drinking is better than abstaining and heavy drinking is worse than abstaining.”
But the University professor’s claims have angered health campaigners. Think-tank 2020Health, say: “This is an unhelpful contribution to the debate. It makes claims which we don’t see any evidence for.” But Dr Poikolainen believes drinking only becomes harmful when people consume more than around 13 units a day.
Men are currently meant to have no more than four units a day but women are supposed to have three units. This equates to 21 units for men and 14 for women. A pint of beer contains around two units. He added that drinking just over a bottle of wine a day won’t harm health, either. A bottle contains 10 units.
So let me get this right in my head…. ‘A bottle a white or red a day keeps the cardiologists at bay!?’
